The slow burning electric guitar twang and Chrissie-Hynde-ish-PJ-Harveyisms of "Gag" kick off Abunai, Baby! with a bang. Track 2, "Last Night (I Followed You Home)", is a real beauty and to my mind the band's crowning achievement--a catchy, haunting indie pop gem with ringing guitar harmonics and distant keyboards that call to mind The Mates Of State and Galaxie 500. "Service Crush" is a love story that never was, propelled by catchy boy/girl vocals. "Robots & Honey" is epic new wave pop, with a satisfying shout-along chorus and massive staccato synth chords--imagine what might happen if a latter day X joined forces with Duran Duran at the height of their powers. Ultimately this is a well-produced, diverse EP with great songs and a ton of hooks. Be sure to check out the band's final release before parting ways, "The Space Race (Laika)" mp3 single, as well as the current projects of former UUDD members, including indie power pop outfit Bang Bang Shoot Shoot and Hot Ensign.
